The 2011 Race to Raise the Most has ended on a successful note. Every team worked very hard to earn funds to help those in need of mammogram screenings and/or diagnostic mammograms in St. Joseph County. This year the teams raised a total of $8,730.74. Great job everyone for all your efforts.

1st place went to Team #1 with a total of $2,480.68 winning the lunch at Legends. Team #1 consisted of Theology; Medieval Institute; Psychology; Center for Children and Families; Philosophy; and Center for Philosophy of Religion.

2nd place - Team #3 raising a total of $2,348.35. (Theology; Medieval Institute; Psychology; Center for Children and Families; Philosophy; and Center for Philosophy of Religion).

3rd place - Team #2 with a total of $1,650.35. (English; Ph.D. in Literature; 301 DCL; Classics; German and Russian Languages and Literatures; Romance Languages and Literatures; Film, Television, and Theatre; Africana Studies; Hesburgh Program; College Seminar; University Writing Program; Reilly Center, Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures and the Honors Program)

4th Place - Team #4 raising a total of $1,396.16. (Anthropology; American Studies; Economics; Faculty Services; Sociology; Cushwa; Computer Applications; Review of Politics, Irish Language and Literature; the Undergraduate Office, A & L Computing; and the Center for Ethics and Culture).

The Dean's office also raised an additional $855.20.

In the last 11 years the College of Arts and Letters has raised almost $90,000.00. We truly have made a difference in our community. A huge thank you to all in the College who participated in the Race and to those who so kindly donated.

The 2011 Race Begins October 1st

Eleven years of fundraising and more than $80,000 raised! For those new to the College of Arts and Letters, during the month of October we have an annual fundraiser, known as the Race to Raise the Most. The Race is a competition between various halls, floors, and buildings throughout the College, consisting of teams who compete to raise the most funds. The funds raised are used for those in St. Joseph County in need of mammogram screenings and/or diagnostic testing. To date we have helped 187 women and men. Last year alone we raised $11,911.

The Race to Raise the Most begins on October 1st and here is the breakdown of the teams:

3rd Floor O'Shag, Performing Arts Building, and CSLC

Flanner Hall, Coleman/Morse, Decio Hall, and Undergraduate Dean's Office

Please keep in mind "team effort". Designating a team captain makes it easier to coordinate your efforts with other members on your team. If all participate and work together, the more you will raise!

Winners of the "Race" will have lunch at Legends paid by the College and will have the satisfaction of knowing they have made a HUGE impact on so many lives in our community.

October 1 - The Race begins!

October 8 - Fundraising Tailgate. We will have food and beverages available for staff. If you would like to participate, let me know so that I can order a table for you to display your items. If weather permits we will set-up just outside O'Shaughnessy Hall (west doors, south quad); if not, we will be inside the Great Hall of O'Shaughnessy.

October 31 - The Race ends.

November 1 - All money must be turned into the Dean's office by noon to be counted as part of the competition.

November 4 - Wrap-up fundraiser at the Administration meeting. (Please note: the Administration meeting changed from November 3 to November 4th.)

The College will make some incentive items available to help you promote the fundraiser. The items available are as follows:

The month of October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for the past 9 years, during the month of October, the College of Arts and Letters has had a fundraiser to raise funds for those in St. Joseph County in need of mammogram screenings and/or diagnostic mammograms. This fundraising endeavor, is now known as the “Race to Raise the Most”. The “Race” is a competition between the various halls, floors, and buildings throughout the College, made up of teams who compete to raise the most funds. Last year we raised $13,347! As most of you know, the month of October is the College of Arts and Letters annual fund raiser in the fight against breast cancer. For those new to the College, this fundraisier is to raise money for mammograms to those in need in St. Joseph County. Over the past 8 years we have raised more than $52,500!

Dear Colleagues,

As many of you know, the College holds an annual fundraiser to pay for mammograms to those in need in St. Joseph County. You may have seen this fundraiser referred to as the "Race to Raise the Most", since there is a competition among the various Arts and Letters buildings. The winners of the competition receive a lunch at Legends, the thrill of victory, and the knowledge that they have made a difference for a worthy cause. This year, they will also receive signed copies of You Can Do This! Surviving Breast Cancer without Losing Your Sanity or Your Style, by Kelly Tuthill, BA in American Studies, University of Notre Dame; MA, Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, respected reporter and news anchor in Boston and is an Advisory Council member for the College of Arts and Letters. Over the last eight years we have raised over $52,000 and have had a tremendous impact on the community!

This year, I would again like to offer you the opportunity to serve as "DEAN FOR THE DAY." The extraordinary perks include: 100’s of e-mails in a day; an office with a view of the O'Shaughnessy sculpture garden; a parking space just steps away from O'Shaughnessy, Decio, Riley and Malloy; a free lunch at the campus restaurant of your choosing and the opportunity to dismiss as irrelevant a series of associate dean and faculty grievances. Also, the Dean’s office will be sponsoring a tailgate on October 24th, 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. in the courtyard between the Snite and O’Shaughnessy (rain place-the Great Hall). The Center for Creative Computing

The Center for Creative Computing (CCC) is raffling off printing in the Digital Studio in 221 Riley. Tickets are $1 each for a chance to win $50, $40, or $30 worth of free printing. Tickets will be available in the Digital Studio Monday through Friday from 9:00am - 6:00pm or in the CCC office between 9:00am - 1:00pm. As part of the “Race to Raise the Most”, the Dean’s office will be sponsoring a tailgate on October 24th, 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. in the courtyard between the Snite and O’Shaughnessy (rain place-The Great Hall). We are in the planning stages and were hoping departments would like to participate by either selling their goods or coming up with a fun idea for the event that would generate money, i.e., games, balloon give away, face painting, hair extensions, etc.

This tailgate would not only be a consorted effort to raise money but also an excuse for us to share time together. I realize that many have traditions that are followed on game day but hope that you can either help in the effort or stop by the tailgate with your friends and family to participate in the festivities.

Please let Mo Marnocha know your thoughts and let her know if you are interested since we will have food and beverages available. If you will be participating and need a table to promote your goods or idea, the Dean’s office will order one for you, just let Mo know.

Your ideas and participation would be greatly appreciated. All donations that you collect would be added to your team total.

One more thing to add regarding the winners of the “Race to Raise the Most”. The winners of the race will be given tickets to the ND Women’s Basketball game on February 14, 2010! I have been working with Stephanie Menio, Director of Operations, and she has also offered for the winning team to be recognized during the “under 12 timeout” in the first half, at approximately 3:20 p.m.!
